Meander

2013
Site specific installation
Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena, CA

Meander is an installation that juxtaposes large-scale cartographic images of the 110 Arroyo Seco Parkway with image insets of underpasses, photographed in walks alongside this often frequented freeway linking the artist’s Brewery studio in downtown LA with the City of Pasadena. The smaller image insets have been overlaid with hand-rendered letterforms, resembling illuminated manuscripts. In the center of the room, an intricate steel, square wire sculpture refers back to the images on the walls via embedded letters, which will only be visible from certain vantage points. With this unique combination of references, O’Brien explores the tension between functionality and aestheticism that permeate analytical marking systems, from writing to charting the natural landscape and how those overlay the man-made environment.
